SOUTHERN AFRICA RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRE (SARDC)

OVERVIEW OF SUPPORT : The SARDC provides information support to the SADC Energy Thematic Group. With support from the Austrian Development Agency, the SARDC produces several information and knowledge products meant to facilitate dialogue among energy stakeholders and information exchange. Among the information products are a bi-monthly newsletter, a weekly news features service, and the SADC Energy Portal. The portal provides a platform for sharing initiatives by ICPs active in the SADC energy sector.

Expected outcome, indicators of project/programme in ICP Regional Energy Support:

No. 1: Functional network platform for information-sharing and knowledge dissemination established.
Indicators include:
- Produce 6 editions of Southern Africa Today newsletter per year and regular energy news features
- Support to the ETG, including
- Ongoing updates of the SADC Energy Portal
- 2 ETG Bulletins per year
- 2 policy briefs
- Produce 1 SADC Energy Monitor, and
- Produce 1 SADC Energy Investment Year Book

No. 2: Coordinated regional actions and priorities for gender mainstreaming in the renewable energy sector.
Indicators are:
- Produce 1 booklet on efforts and benefits of mainstreaming gender in SADC RE sector
- Produce 1 status report on existing legal and policy frameworks on gender mainstreaming in SADC RE sector
- Develop gender-disaggregated database on status of women and men in the RE sector
- Create a network of key stakeholders in SADC RE sector
- Awareness raising on issues of mainstreaming gender in RE sector, including
- 3 factsheets
- 3 articles in Southern Africa Today per year, and
- 12 news features
- Knowledge support to national gender focal points

No. 3: Same indicators as No. 1, excluding SADC Energy Monitor.

Achievements, indicators of project/programme in ICP Regional Energy Support:

No. 1: Implementation in progress. Most outputs produced and while work is at an advanced stage for the production of the SADC Energy Monitor and Investment Year Book.

No. 2: Implementation also in progress. Work on the booklet advancing well.

No. 3: Implementation to commence in July 2016.

Outcomes/Results in ETG Action Plan, indicators:

Outcome/Result Area 4, Activity 1: Secured additional support from ADA for continued activities under Project 1. Current activities under Communicating Energy in Southern Africa run until June 2016. Extension of Project 1 runs until June 2017. Also secured support from ADA for implementation of a project on Mainstreaming Gender in SADC RE Sector which will run until September 2018.

Outcome/Result Area 4, Activity 3: SADC Energy Portal regularly updated but would require constant supply of information from ICPs and other ETG members
